It's common to look for ways to save money, but when it comes to therapy, bargaining over fees can be disrespectful and unproductive. Therapists set their rates based on their expertise, experience, and the costs of running their practice. Think of it as a professional business transaction, not a charitable service.

Therapists are Professionals: Like other professionals, therapists have invested time and resources in their education and training, and they deserve fair pay for their specialized skills.

Therapist's Time is Valuable: Therapy sessions are time-intensive. Therapy sessions require significant time and effort before, during and after your session. Therapists need to earn a living, just like anyone else, to sustain themselves and their loved ones.

Fees Reflect Expertise and Experience: A therapist's fees often reflect their level of experience, specialization, and the quality of care they provide. You are paying for a professional service.

Therapists have expenses to cover: Just like any other business, therapists have overhead costs like rent, utilities, and staff salaries and they need to earn enough to cover those expenses.

It's a Business Transaction: The relationship between a therapist and a client is a professional one. Fees are a standard part of this business arrangement. Your therapist might provide you a safe and secure space but it is important to respect the professional nature of this relationship and abide by all the ethics that govern this relationship.

Negotiating Can Damage the Therapeutic Relationship: Negotiating fees can create an awkward power dynamic. Bargaining can create an uncomfortable situation and undermine the trust and rapport needed for effective therapy.

Some practices have set pay rates: Some practices will have a set pay rate, which can't be altered or lowered, and it's not always the therapist's choice for rates.

Consider Alternatives if Fees are Unaffordable: If you find the therapist's fees are unaffordable, consider exploring options like applying for free and concessional services the therapist might offer, or seeking out therapists with lower rates. At Unified Brain Health Care, we partner with our charity organisation Arunai Neuro Foundation to offer "pay what you can" sessions and free support group sessions for those who need it. Just as with any professional service, therapists deserve to be compensated for their time and expertise. Seeking advice during unpaid calls is inappropriate. Their time is their professional product. It's akin to consuming a meal at a restaurant without payment
