Physiotherapy is the best bet for better health in Parkinson's Disease

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

Ms. Radhika C.M., Physiotherapist, Unified Brain Health Care

The ability to move around and stay active is important for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Research shows Parkinson’s disease patients become less active than their non-Parkinson’s age matched peers. PD causes slowness in movement (bradykinesia), tremor and rigidity. It can cause postural changes, reduced balance and difficulties with mobility.

Physiotherapy can make a huge difference in the quality of life to people living with Parkinson’s disease, from the time of diagnosis throughout the course of the disease. Regular exercise has been recognised as a powerful tool to help improve mobility, posture and balance. It helps in preventing falls which in turn significantly reduces risks of hospitalizations and other unnecessary complications.

Doing 3 hours of physiotherapist recommended exercise each week has shown to slow the progression of symptoms. Exercise can help manage physical symptoms along with other symptoms such as sleep problems, fatigue, mood and mental health disturbances. Regular physiotherapy is as important as medications to help take control and manage symptoms.

If you are diagnosed with PD or know anyone with Parkinson’s disease, it is recommended to start physiotherapy in the early stages of the disease. It is especially necessary to choose a qualified physiotherapist with experience in the management of Parkinson’s disease for providing accurate assessment, quality advice and evidence based therapy.
